Is Film More Important Than Life?

Recently, I've grown more and more tired of genre films, even the good ones. This is frustrating since film is what I am really passionate about. It doesn't help that I don’t get to watch as many movies as I used to, either. But I doubt that the sheer number of films has much to do with my lack of enthusiasm about films in general.

Meditation on Thinking

I like thinking about thinking. It makes you wonder why you have a certain way of thinking, a process that is unique to your own. And since it's also difficult to explain what that is to the others, such meditation tends to be continued by you only, getting another chance at reaching an understanding of yourself without interruptions or comparisons.

A Short History of Korean Blockbusters

Many consider the movie Shiri to be the movie that started the trend of blockbuster films in South Korea. When Shiri was being produced, many professionals in the film industry were negative about its outcome. To spend so much on a genre film that Koreans were unfamiliar with was a huge risk for all involved. Instead, however, the film became the highest grossing film and was able to, for the first time, compete with Hollywood blockbusters. The impact Shiri had on South Korea was not just in its commercial success. It allowed the South Korean film industry to have first hand experience of what a blockbuster film can do for them and its audience.

Why I Haven't Upgraded My PC, Yet

It seems improvement in technology doesn’t always mean better, but also a compromise of the old for the new. For example, word processing makes editing and distribution much easier and more efficient. However, a simple type writer doesn’t require you to be plugged into an electric grid nor require a complex, high maintenance hardware. Since it’s difficult to consider myself a futurist and actually have had used a type writer before, I would have to consider myself a techno realist. This is probably not unlike most people considering themselves middle class in terms of income.

Is WETA Too Tired, Already?

When I first heard that WETA was going to work on Bong, Jun-ho's (Memories of Murder) creature feature, The Host, I was happy to know that WETA was willing to help. It was New Zealand, a recently booming film industry, helping out the other booming industry in South Korea, hence benefiting from each other. But soon after that news was announced, WETA decided they had to back down. They had too many movies to work on all at once. WETA will still be a part of The Host, but only partially, now.

Recognizing the Old You

Recently, I have been looking at my old photos and archiving old Hi-8 tapes. It's amazing how much different I looked compared to now. I also started organizing my Word documents; categorizing them in their own folders, naming them properly (not named after the first sentence of the document).

When We Were Together, There Was Nothing to Fear

I think it was the South Korean movie Friend that I first heard this line from. It was strange and ironic how it made me feel nostalgic about something I never really had: close childhood friends.

Nintendo Generation Micro

There are things in life that just repeats and never quits. You promise or make yourself believe you're beyond that, but it just keeps coming back to haunt you: you obsess over it all over again. This is true whether it be TV, sleeping late, slacking off, or in this instance, gaming.

Why I Think Working Online is Still Very 'Cool'

After a long absence of heat and UV rays penetrating through your skin, you stare at your pale beige skin, not far from the color of a standard computer chassis. At that point, getting acquainted with yourself becomes a bit more awkward than urinating beside a perfect stranger (if you're male). Who is this Asian male without his trademark yellowness? Those were my high school days when I finally had my own personal computer.
