Cascading Films
It seems our understanding of past movies change every time we revisit them. This is perhaps because the light that projects the films is never the same intensity, as well as because there will always be a newer film the light must pass through before reaching the older ones. Much like the cascading style sheets used in this website the films that come before and after affect each other; creating familiar yet newer images.
Despite the shear volume of movies being made, archiving is no longer an issue thanks to information technology. As such, more efforts are being invested in discovery, restoration, and distribution of older and previously inaccessible films by the public. This ever growing library of movies from both ends of the temporal spectrum has made linear way of experiencing movies obsolete as did non-linear editing for their creation.
This seems to signal a certain maturity in the medium. Although some may dismiss this as mere convenience of accessibility, it seems reasonable to state that film has become something as essential to our culture as is wine or painting. Just as wines or paintings are valued not solely by their age but also their craftsmanship and artistry, film has become a timeless medium propelled both by its past and its future.
Let there be light. Let there be film. You are free to cringe now.
